Walking, water, and wow
A generously laid out village with Karwendel Nature Park (the largest nature park in Austria) on one side and the turquoise waters of Lake Achensee on the other. Although it is a fairly small place, buildings are spaced out to enable inspiring views of the surrounding peaks from almost everywhere.
The proximity to Karwendel Nature Park means hiking and biking are easily the most popular activities here. But even just chilling out by the waterfront is spectacularly pretty. Better still, take a little stroll along the lakefront path, maybe even stopping off for a quick dip.

Lakeside fun
When you have a lake as pretty as Achensee on the doorstep, you have to make the most of it. Feeling active? Try a kiteboarding lesson or hire a SUP. Just want to chill out? Head for the sunbathing lawn.
And relax
Saunas are great, but what they lack is a decent view... Not the case at Atoll Achensee. This leisure and activity centre boasts a magnificent ‘penthouse spa’ where four themed saunas offer incredible panoramic alpine views.
Castle in the mountains
Just beyond the valley, 20 minutes by car, the imposing Gothic fortress Tratzberg Castle sit on the mountainside. Explore the fairy-tale-like castle, immerse yourself in a 3D virtual reality tour, and check out the impressive weapons and armour exhibit.
SkyGlider AirRofan
If you’ve ever wanted to soar like an eagle over the treetops, here’s your chance. Travel up to Rofan cable car station, then zoom down on the SkyGlider at up to 80kph. It's like hang gliding, but on a zipline.
Back in the saddle
A pretty lakeside path means you can take a leisurely ride almost all the way round Achensee. Pack a picnic lunch and, of course, when you’re done, a quick dip in the lake will cool you off.
Local oil massage
A relaxing massage after a hike is always welcome, and spas here use Achensee oil, which is extracted from local shale rocks. Tiroler Steinöl (stone oil) is hailed for its healing properties. You can learn more at the local museum.
