How to choose the best family ski resort?
Choosing the right family ski resort comes down to a few key things:
- Transfer time - A non-negotiable with kids. A two-hour transfer is manageable; four hours with tired children is not. Look for resorts with short, straightforward transfers from the airport - our ski weekends page can offer some great inspo!
- Beginner slopes - most children (and plenty of parents) will spend at least their first day or two on the nursery slopes, so make sure the resort has a dedicated beginner area that's separate from the main mountain traffic. Free nursery lifts can also be a big bonus to save some cash!
- Ski schools - the best family resorts make ski school drop-off easy. Ideally you want the ski school meeting point slope-side or within easy walking distance of your hotel, so you're not trekking across the resort in full kit with a four-year-old.
- Childcare and crèche facilities - if you're travelling with very young children who aren't ready for the slopes yet, childcare provision can make or break a trip. Heidi has over 330 hotels with childcare services across 11 countries - from ski kindergartens to crèche facilities - so you can hit the slopes knowing the little ones are in good hands. We recommend using the kids club filter to see what's on offer.
- Ski-in/ski-out - not essential, but it makes an enormous difference when you're dealing with small children. Getting kids in and out of ski kit is much easier when the slopes are right outside the door.
- Village safety and layout - car-free resorts like Avoriaz and Wengen are brilliant for families because children can move around freely without worrying about traffic. Compact resorts also mean less walking between the hotel, slopes, and restaurants.
- Off-slope activities - even the keenest little skiers need a day off the mountain eventually. Look for resorts with sledging, ice skating, swimming pools, or a good spa for the grown-ups while the kids burn off energy elsewhere.
What time of year is best to book a family ski holiday?
- Christmas and New Year are ideal for those wanting to enjoy some skiing alongside wonderful winter activities like husky sledding, firework displays, ice skating, and meeting jolly old St. Nicholas!
- Half-term is the most reliable time of year for snow, but it can also be the busiest and most expensive. For trips during this time, we recommend looking for hidden gems or taking a trip to Italy, where schools haven't broken up.
- Easter comes right at the end of the ski season, which can mean snow becomes more limited, but if you choose a high-altitude resort, you'll still see plenty of white stuff before the season finishes!
What are the best ski resorts for families?
It all depends on when you're planning to go. With young kids, we recommend travelling outside of the school holidays, but for those with older children and teens, there are tons of great options:
- Christmas and New Year family ski holidays: Enjoy the magic of the festive period in Zermatt, Zell am See, and Chamonix
- February half term family ski holidays: Experience the season's heaviest snow dumps with family fun in Flaine, Wengen, and St Anton.
- Easter family ski holidays: The quietest time to travel with kids. We recommend going high-altitude with holidays in Tignes, Cortina d'Ampezzo, and Geilo.
How can I get a cheap family ski holiday?
Avoiding the school holidays with young kids is the best way to save money on your ski trip, but if you need to travel during Christmas, half-term, and Easter, then opting for smaller resorts away from the big names or travelling further afield to countries such as Norway can ensure better deals and fewer crowds.
How to start skiing with kids?
We recommend booking a resort with gentle slopes and designated kids' zones, dressing them in good sets of layers, and enrolling them in ski school. Focus on making those first few ski days fun and exciting - with plenty of breaks to do other fun things such as skating, sledding, and exploring the area!
We've never been skiing as a family before, do you have any tips?
It's all about convenience and making the holiday easy and stress-free. Fortunately, many resorts offer hotels and other amenities designed for family skiing!
If you want to book the holiday yourself, we recommend:
- Choosing pleasant, sociable flight times that don't require super early or late departure times.
- Opting for a shuttle or private transfer can be slightly more expensive, but it does provide a level of comfort that a coach transfer cannot.
- Selecting a hotel close to the slopes/centre of the resort. The last thing you'll want to do is hike across town with your (and your kids) ski gear. Being close to the slopes makes it easier to hit the lifts and ski school in the morning. Meanwhile, being close to the resort centre can mean more bus links to the slopes and evening activities on your doorstep.

How much does a ski holiday cost for a family of four?
A family ski holiday for 2 adults and 2 children can range anywhere from £2,000 up, depending on your destination, duration, accommodation, and ski lessons and ski hire. That said, there are plenty of ways to keep costs down on your ski holiday. To find out more, read our guide here.
What is the best age to take a child skiing?
Before the age of six is often the best time to take your child skiing for the first time, but that said, you can learn to ski at any age.
Is skiing a good family holiday?
Yes! Skiing is a fantastic family holiday, especially for the adventurous! Combining lots of lovely outdoor time, quality moments together, and the opportunity to learn a new skill alongside your little ones, skiing is a fantastic option for a fun family holiday outside of the summer holidays.
Can I book ski school through Heidi?
Yes, you can! Many large resorts offer ski schools that provide group lessons, which can be booked on our website during checkout. For smaller resorts, for individual lessons, or if you need a bit of help and advice, just get in touch with our team at Heidi to discuss it further.
What do family ski holiday packages include?
A family ski holiday package brings together everything you need for a ski trip - flights, transfers, accommodation, and the ability to add lift passes, equipment hire, and lessons - into a single booking. It takes the stress out of planning, particularly when you're coordinating travel for kids.
What does an all-inclusive family ski holiday include?
An all-inclusive family ski holiday typically includes flights, transfers, accommodation, lift passes, ski hire, ski school lessons, and meals - all bundled into one upfront price. Some resorts include childcare and crèche facilities too, which makes a big difference when you're travelling with young children.
Though we include flights, transfers, and accommodation as standard, lift passes, ski hire, and ski lessons are optional extras you can add either at check out or after booking. This makes it easy to just add only what you need.
Bulgaria is one of the best destinations for all-inclusive family ski holidays, with resorts like Bansko and Borovets offering exceptional value. Just be aware lift queues can get busy at half-term, and the best accommodation does tend to get snapped up fast!
Are ski passes and ski hire cheaper for children?
Yes. Most resorts have varying child rates for ski passes and ski equipment hire. In some resorts, the ski pass can even be free for children (depending on their age), and for older teenagers, the age at which they are considered an 'adult' varies between resorts.

Outside of skiing, what other activities are there for children on a family ski holiday?
We get it, kids have never-ending energy and excitement, so it helps to know what else you can do outside of enjoying the slopes (especially after hours).
In the early afternoons and evenings, activities like dog sledding, horse and carriage rides, or even tobogganing can be great on-the-snow experiences for the little ones. But as things get darker, many resorts continue the entertainment with options such as ice-skating rinks, bowling alleys, and even swimming pools with water slides!
