This is a fantastic place to stay in the "Partenkirchen" part of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. To my mind, this is the more picturesque part of the town, although the whole town and area is beautiful.

As with other hotels in the town, each guest gets a pass to make use of local buses, so you can get to the train station in a short amount of time (or, if you prefer, it's about 20-30 minutes on foot). There is parking available for a small amount... costs more if you want to park underground, but the car park adjacent to the building was good enough.

There is no large reception area or lounge, but our room was spacious and comfortable. We were on the top floor, and made good use of the space inside and balcony. The views over the town and the Alps was wonderful, especially in the summer evenings when, more often than not, there was a thunderstorm to watch. With a large roof overhang, we could stay dry whilst watching the storm unfold over Germany's highest mountain.

Breakfast was really good; loads of choice and everything was top quality. There is no longer the option for dinner there, although pictures on the walls show that this place used to be hugely important in terms of the town's social and festival calendar. Sad it no longer has that role, as it would be nice to have dinner there. That said, there are so many restaurants just a few minutes on foot - Indian over the road, Greek around the corner, Italian not too far, as well as more local and traditional Bavarian places. You certainly won't go hungry.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself is such a great base for the region. Easy to get up to the various peaks via cable cars; the Partnachklamm gorge is not far and worth the visit (although seems to be busier than it used to be); you've got Ludwig II's only completed palace (Linderhof) around 20-30 minutes away by car, and his fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein about an hour or so away. Plus so much more... Oberammagau, Mittenwald, the historic 1936 Olympic ski stadium, and plenty of lakes where you can swim in the summer months.

Would we stay here again... no question. I used to visit this town often as a child, although this was my first time back in over twenty years. No doubt I will return again at some point, and would happily book at this hotel again. And to have the church bells ring out early in the morning, or to hear the cowbells as the neighbours move their herd down the streets in the early morning, makes it all the more magical.

A great hotel in a lovely part of Germany

The hotel is clean, quiet and large rooms and nice big bathrooms. The staff speaks English and is courteous. 

We had booked a double room with balcony. We got a room on the first floor and the balcony was so not useful. Right outside our room, we overlooked into  someone’s dirty terrace with stagnant water. It was so disgusting. The 2-3 buildings next to our balcony were so run down and dirty that we didn’t ever sit in the balcony. We kind of felt cheated. 

Another negative - there is no reception area to sit and chill. You either are in your room or you go out. In that sense it is not like a hotel, more like a bed and breakfast. 

The location is nice and everything else was good. I might come back to this hotel but will ensure I get a room on the second floor or not the same room that we got this time. 

You can hear church bells and you can hear cows going to graze at 7am .. it is a delight!

Hotel is situated in walking distance of all public transportation in the Altstadt.

Lovely place to stay. Thoroughly recommend it. Very helpful staff. Superb breakfast. The complimentary bus pass was very useful. Within five minutes walk of several restaurants. Five minute bus ride to the Bahnhof. Five minute bus ride to the Wankbahn.
We will return to the Schatten.
