Car-free, and only accessed via the historic Wengernalpbahn cogwheel railway climbing from Lauterbrunnen far below, the Swiss resort of Wengen sits 1,274m up with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau arranged in a perfect arc opposite - a view that guests have been returning for since the 1870s.
Walking holidays in Wengen delight hikers with some of the best maintained trails in the Bernese Oberland, including gentle village strolls, wildflower meadows frolics, and some seriously demanding alpine ascents.
The Männlichen cable car reaches 2,343m, from which you can walk the panoramic Männlichen–Kleine Scheidegg ridge for two hours of uninterrupted Eiger views. Meanwhile, for families, the themed Lieselotte trail around Männlichen and the playground at Kleine Scheidegg are perennial favourites.

Getting to and around town:
Your airport transfer is included with your trip. Once there, you’ll find Wengen a quiet, car-free village with everything - hotels, restaurants, trails, and the Männlichen cable car station - in easy walking distance.
Getting to your walks and hikes:
The Wengen–Männlichen Aerial Cableway departs next to the tourist office and reaches Männlichen in five minutes. The Wengernalpbahn cogwheel train connects Wengen to Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg.

Can I still access Wengen's lift and gondolas in the summer?
Yes, you can. Wengen's lifts and gondolas still operate throughout the summer months, provided conditions are safe and favourable, and many of the mountain huts are still operational, so you can grab a bite to eat while savouring those epic mountain views.
When do Wengen's lifts and gondolas run during summer?
Harderbahn Funicular (Harder Kulm)
- Operating times: 09:10 – 21:40 (last descent — varies by season)
- Opens: 3rd April 2026
- Closes: 29th November 2026
- Note: Runs every 30 minutes
First Gondola (Grindelwald)
- Operating times: 08:00 – 18:00
- Opens: Mid-May 2026 (daily from mid-June 2026)
- Closes: 27th October 2026
Gornergrat Bahn (Cogwheel Railway)
- Operating times: First train 07:00, last train down 19:00 (varies by season)
- Opens: Year-round

Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe
- Operating times: Year-round (check jungfrau.ch for current 2026 timetable)
A quick "Mountain Rule of Thumb": Last ascent is usually 15–30 minutes before the official closing time, and Last descent is the very last cabin down. If you miss it, it’s a long walk back!
Can I hire a mountain guide on my Wengen walking holiday?
Yes, you can. Though these are not currently bookable via the Heidi website, you can enquire and book with the local tourist office, or visit their website. We recommend enquiring early to ensure availability.
What does the Wengen summer card give me?
The Jungfrau Region Guest Card (free with selected accommodations) covers unlimited travel on buses and a 30% discount on return journeys on Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola and Wengen-Männlichen, as well as 15% off return journeys on Pfingsteggbahn cableway and Pfingsteggbahn.
