How to choose the best family ski resort?
Choosing the right family ski resort comes down to a few key things:
- Transfer time - A non-negotiable with kids. A two-hour transfer is manageable; four hours with tired children is not. Look for resorts with short, straightforward transfers from the airport - our ski weekends page can offer some great inspo!
- Beginner slopes - most children (and plenty of parents) will spend at least their first day or two on the nursery slopes, so make sure the resort has a dedicated beginner area that's separate from the main mountain traffic. Free nursery lifts can also be a big bonus to save some cash!
- Ski schools - the best family resorts make ski school drop-off easy. Ideally you want the ski school meeting point slope-side or within easy walking distance of your hotel, so you're not trekking across the resort in full kit with a four-year-old.
- Childcare and crèche facilities - if you're travelling with very young children who aren't ready for the slopes yet, childcare provision can make or break a trip. What time of year is best to book a family ski holiday?
- Christmas and New Year are ideal for those wanting to enjoy some skiing alongside wonderful winter activities like husky sledding, firework displays, ice skating, and meeting jolly old St. Nicholas!
- Half-term is the most reliable time of year for snow, but it can also be the busiest and most expensive. For trips during this time, we recommend looking for hidden gems or taking a trip to Italy, where schools haven't broken up.
- Easter comes right at the end of the ski season, which can mean snow becomes more limited, but if you choose a high-altitude resort, you'll still see plenty of white stuff before the season finishes!
What are the best ski resorts for families?
It all depends on when you're planning to go. With young kids, we recommend travelling outside of the school holidays, but for those with older children and teens, there are tons of great options:
- Christmas and New Year family ski holidays: Enjoy the magic of the festive period in Zermatt, Zell am See, and Chamonix
- February half term family ski holidays: Experience the season's heaviest snow dumps with family fun in Flaine, Wengen, and St Anton.

How can I get a cheap family ski holiday?
Avoiding the school holidays with young kids is the best way to save money on your ski trip, but if you need to travel during Christmas, half-term, and Easter, then opting for smaller resorts away from the big names or travelling further afield to countries such as Norway can ensure better deals and fewer crowds.
How to start skiing with kids?
We recommend booking a resort with gentle slopes and designated kids' zones, dressing them in good sets of layers, and enrolling them in ski school. Focus on making those first few ski days fun and exciting - with plenty of breaks to do other fun things such as skating, sledding, and exploring the area!
We've never been skiing as a family before, do you have any tips?
It's all about convenience and making the holiday easy and stress-free. Fortunately, many resorts offer hotels and other amenities designed for family skiing!
If you want to book the holiday yourself, we recommend:
- Choosing pleasant, sociable flight times that don't require super early or late departure times.
- Opting for a shuttle or private transfer can be slightly more expensive, but it does provide a level of comfort that a coach transfer cannot.
- Selecting a hotel close to the slopes/centre of the resort. The last thing you'll want to do is hike across town with your (and your kids) ski gear. Being close to the slopes makes it easier to hit the lifts and ski school in the morning. Meanwhile, being close to the resort centre can mean more bus links to the slopes and evening activities on your doorstep.
