We stayed for 5 nights at the hotel and it was a really nice experience. The hotel is gorgeous and the staff are all very polite. We really loved the use of the ski room by the front entrance and the little details like the 007 locker. The front desk staff were all so helpful and kind. We also thought the bar served incredible drinks and had a great selection. I would absolutely return here and recommend the hotel to others in the future.

We stayed at Bergwelt Grindelwald - Alpine Design Resort for four nights over Christmas (including Christmas Day) during our honeymoon, and it was a huge disappointment.

A few days before we were due to arrive we received an email from the hotel asking if we would like to add a Christmas tree and decorations in our room. This got us very excited for our stay. However, when we selected this option we then received a message saying it was unavailable. The hotel should not be putting forward this option if it was not available. This was the first disappointment.

The hotel offers a pick up service from the train and after we were picked up and taken to the hotel the driver asked if we were ok to handle our bags ourselves. We were travelling from Sydney and had large heavy bags with us so we found this very unprofessional.

The room we booked was a 'Corner Room with Eiger View' which, according to the website, was the most expensive room below a suite. Upon entering the room we were immediately underwhelmed. The room was on a low level and there was nothing special in the room for our honeymoon. Every hotel we went to in Switzerland did something special for our honeymoon, whether it was a cake, champagne, special chocolate or petals on the bed, however at this hotel there was nothing.  We then went to reception to complain, first about the low level room which did not have the views that were shown on the website, and second  that there was nothing special for our honeymoon. The person we spoke to at reception could do nothing about the room given it was a busy period and said there was meant to be something special in our room and he would sort it out. Hours later there were some chocolates and biscuits delivered, which were the same chocolates and biscuits that were freely available at reception. Disappointing. 

Weeks before we arrived at the hotel we emailed asking if the hotel would be doing a Christmas lunch on Christmas Day or whether we should look to book something in the village, to which they confirmed there would be and would be delighted to welcome us for a "festive Christmas lunch." When we arrived at lunch the restaurant staff handed us the bar menu. We were shocked. This was not what we expected  for a festive Christmas lunch and at this point it was too late to find a lunch booking in the village. We made our disappointment known to the restaurant staff who explained that for lunch that day they were only serving the bar menu, but the full menu was available at dinner. We then asked if they could reserve us a table for dinner that night, but the restaurant staff said they were fully booked until 8pm. We then went to reception to let them know how upset we were about what occurred and all they could say was that there must have been 'some miscommunication'. We then explained again how disappointed we had been with our stay so far, given it was our honeymoon, and they said they would talk to the manager to see what they could do. Nothing was done.

On the two occasions we ordered room service, the hotel staff said that for any drinks or food that was requested to be delivered from the room service menu there would be an extra charge (from memory it was an extra 10 CHF for delivering an Aperol Spritz and an extra 20 CHF for any food). This was shocking to us. Also, on a seperate occasion we had requested wine glasses be delivered to the room, we were met with attitude (almost as if this was too hard) and the hotel staff asked if we could pick them up from the bar. Shocking.  

Another strange thing abut this hotel is that use of the spa area (including the outdoor jacuzzi) is limited to pre-booked 90 minute time slots, despite having to share this time slot with 10-20 people. This wasn't a huge inconvenience to us given we aren't big jacuzzi or spa users, however any person considering booking this hotel should know about this. 

When we were checking out, the hotel staff smiled and asked us how our stay was. This  felt like a punch in the face given we had already told the hotel staff how disappointed we were. Either the hotel staff were just wilfully ignoring our complaints or there was no communication amongst the staff. 

Our stay at Bergwelt Grindelwald - Alpine Design Resort was the biggest disappointment of our honeymoon, made worse because our stay was over Christmas. We will not be returning to this hotel.
