Eiger Lodge had million dollar views when the skies were clear and a great location with just minutes to the train station and Grindelwald Terminal for cable car transfers to the big mountains. Sadly, that's where all the good news ends.

I am generally not a complainer, but Eiger Lodge is one of those places that people need to be made more aware of. I read all the reviews, and thought this was going to be a cracker of a place. But wow, did I get a shock!!!

The chic rooms (bear in mind that these rooms are the best they had to offer) were VERY basic - no kettle or tea/coffee making facilities, no wardrobes, no fridge (which we needed to keep life-saving medication cool), no safe to keep your valuables in, a lumpy pillow (or was it just a bunch of stuffing inside a pillow case? - I couldn't tell), two single beds put side by side rather than a queen bed and a communal kitchen with a couple of microwaves and kettles to re-heat meals and boil water that felt like I was back at a secondary school camp again.

And what's with those usb ports and powerpoints at the bed head? The effect of having your phone charging cable dangling in your face at night was an interesting one. 

The best way I could describe the chic rooms was a glorified back-packers room with your own private bathroom. 

The only time you could make or get a coffee in the communal high school breakfast area was during breakfast time (7am-10am), and outside those hours, they close off the area with the coffee machine, so you're forced to go and buy one somewhere else.

There are only 2 restaurants nearby: one connected to Eiger "Lodge" (and I use the word lodge VERY loosely) and the other a few minutes walk away. Other than that, there are no shops, no services, no facilities anywhere nearby unless you're prepared to do a very hilly 15-20 minute walk into the central township of Grindelwald.

The local bus system shuts down at around 7.00-7.30pm, so if you're not back at the "lodge" by then, you're basically stuck wherever you are with no way to get back other than by foot, or selling a kidney to afford to use the train system (and good luck figuring THAT out while you're here and working out which package suits you best). 

Look, if you wanted budget accommodation and were trying to get away with staying somewhere cheap for the night and prepared to pay budget prices, it would be fine. The room (basic as it was), was clean enough with a decent shower, but for over $430AUD/night including the city taxes, I can't justify the exorbitant and extortionist pricing.

The only good thing management did (after I made a fair point and reasonable request) was bring a small bar fridge to our room for the medication which was greatly appreciated as we were not prepared to leave it in a communal fridge with a bunch of total strangers having access to it.

Do your research. Shop around. Would I recommend staying here to anyone else or would I come back and stay here again? Hell no I would not!!! Surely there has to be better options out there for the price.

Shop around!! Absolute blind rip-off for the price. Keep this one as a final option in case you can't find anything else

Could not recommend this place more! Staff (especially Mirka) were incredibly helpful and accommodated every need. Safe luggage storage before check-in, delicious breakfast, and spectacular bedroom views. We actually preferred staying a little walk outside of the busy heart of town. Our stay included a free bus pass, discounted lift tickets, and a discount at their sister restaurant in town. We’d love to stay here again!

A truly magical place. Expensive no doubt but the view from the balcony made up for it. I had superb view of the mountains. Breakfast and the nearby restaurant served good food. Pls note that there is not air-conditioning in the rooms and no doors in the shower area ( open concept).  Very near to Grindelwald Terminal and bus that bring you to the town for free!

Stayed in the Eiger Lodge Chic for the 2nd time on a ski trip. We were a group of 10 with 3 rooms between us. The excellent location and fantastic communal areas brought us back. It really feels like a friendly place where everyone can relax and enjoy the adventures all around. The staff were once again really friendly and helpful. We will no doubt be back for our 3rd fix next year and look forward to seeing how the renovations turn out!
