Hotel Belle Étoile

Alpe d'Huez

Went to Tomorrowland Winter and stayed at this hotel. We paid €1,750 per person for a basic double room and breakfast, which was not worth it at all. There was no communication with the staff — no way to get in touch with them. The phone number provided on our confirmation voucher didn’t work at any point during our stay.

The staff is not present at night. We lost our room keys at 2 a.m., and the hotel was no help at all as no one was present. We tried to contact them multiple times, even the Tomorrowland emergency number attempted to reach them (we had to wait for their feedback for 2 hours) but without success. Thankfully, we found the keys the next morning in the Tomorrowland lost and found.

It’s quite concerning to think that many drunk guests were present in the hotel, yet no staff were available to assist in case of an emergency.

Probably a decent hotel if you’re paying €60 per night, but for the price we paid, it was absolutely not worth it. Also worth mentioning: there is no storage at all in the room and there is no cleaning service for the entire week.

For your ski equipment, there is a ski storage area next to the entrance, but it has no lockers and the main door entrance isn’t even closed at night.

Unacceptable

The accommodation was lovely, small and basic but comfy beds, nice amenities with the hot tub and sauna and really good location. However, this was ruined by the hosts’ attitude. On arrival, we were told we could use the upstairs dining room whenever we liked and we could “help ourselves” to anything in their bar area as long as we wrote it down so we could pay at the end for what we used. However, we soon learnt this was not the case and during our stay the host couple became quite hostile towards us and were consistently told off like naughty children. There was some squash on the counter and as this was readily available and we were told we could “help ourselves”, we mixed some with our water. One of the hosts abruptly told us “that’s private you can’t use that”. We apologised. however we weren’t to know that this wasn’t to be used. After a long day of skiing, we helped ourselves to some fruit from the fruit bowl which was on the breakfast table, which made it look as if we could take some, and fruit was not included on the price list. The female host then said “you can’t take that, that’s only for breakfast” with such an attitude. If we can’t help ourselves, why say that when checking in? Also, if things are private or we’re not supposed to help ourselves to items at certain times, why leave them out? Surely you’d just put them in the kitchen out of the way. We also made ourselves some tea with our own teabags, and then were told “you can’t use that milk that’s private, you need to use that milk on the bottom shelf” which is just absolutely ridiculous. What topped it all off was at the end before checking out, my aunt made a tea with her own teabag and just used some water. The male host said “have you used a tea bag” and she said “no it’s my own”, and he said “you still need to pay because you used our water”. We have never heard anything so ridiculous and petty in all our lives, in what world can you not use the hotel water for free? They didn’t say goodbye to us or “I hope you had a nice holiday” at the end. It created a really hostile environment and we were made to feel like an inconvenience throughout our trip. We learned that the hosts actually don’t own the hotel but were hired as hosts for the season- please do not hire them again as you’d have a really lovely place with better hosts.

Great place, awful hosts

Stayed here for the opening week of the 2021/22 season, on a 'seasonaires shakedown week'. The chalet host Karin was very very good and did a great job in instructing her new staff on their roles. The food was outstanding and an absolute credit to the chef.  Rooms are reasonably sized with a twin bed set up, wardrobe, bedside cabinets and a small work desk & chair. The bathrooms look to have been fairly recently refurbished. Just a shower,wash basin  & toilet no bath. Fitted with a hairdryer. Plenty of hooks on the walls for hanging stuff. There is a Ski/boot room near the front door though the boot ''warmers'' didn't seem to provide any heat just air. There is a Sauna in the basement and a hot tub just outside on the deck. Both fully functioning. The location is also very good. Leaving the chalet and turning LEFT takes you to a piste which is only anout 50 metres away. Once on this you can ski down to either a 'cage' type open lift or with a good shuss takes you to The Alpe Express Gondola which gives you access to the rest of the ski area.
