We wanted to stay two nights in or near Rjukan where we would be visiting an old friend.  We knew it would be a thirty minute drive to town and that the road would be curvy but being summer weather it would not be a problem.  We are so glad we took the chance because this turned out to be a beautiful ski lodge/summer retreat with hiking trails.  Everything was beyond beautiful with the scenery from our deck and room and the hotel really first class.  The restaurant and drinks were excellent as well.  While in Rjukan we visited the Heavy Water Plant and the outdoor heritage park.

We were charged for a daily breakfast buffet we weren't given details for and didn't attend, simply because the hotel doesn’t check room numbers for people attending the buffet! We'd emailed the hotel to book and pay for our room in advance, and at no point during booking or check-in were we informed about the breakfast buffet or that we'd be charged regardless of whether we ate it or not. On checkout when the charges suddenly appeared, we requested a refund but the concierge refused, saying it would be “our word against theirs” since they don't check room numbers at the buffet. This kind of underhanded practice is illegal in many countries but obviously not in Norway.

Watch out for unexplained charges on checkout!

We rented one of the cabins near by the hotel. A really nice cabin with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a big livingroom and well equipped kitchen.
Breakfast was included and was the reason why we chose a cabin instead of hotel rooms. but we had some issues with this during the stay. When we booked we got assurrances that breakfast was included, but we got questions about this a couple of times during the stay. Seems like the hotel staff was confused and not well informed. But in the end we didn't pay extra for breakfast. It just isn't very nice to be confronted with this in front of other guests.

The dinner we had in the restaurant was not what I would expect from this kind of hotel. "Høyfjellshotell" has a certain expectation about it...

I had a feeling that the hotel staff was new because all questions were answered with a kind of uncertainty and also information was wrong from time to time. About the other restaurants/cafes, opening hours, menu, breakfast and so on. 

A nice playing ground for children outside was good and access to the indoor pool was nice.

There was a lot of mosquitos that didn't give any possibility to open windows. So it was hot in the rooms at night.

We had 2 trips to Gaustatoppen in 2 days. The first day the weather was good so we took our drone to the top with the Gaustabanen in the evening. There were 2 hours waiting time to get down so we decided to walk down the steapest path to get our car by the Gaustabanen.
The next day we walked up from the parking lot by the Stavsrohytta. We had one child of 2 years in a child carrier and changed the carrier during the walk.
Child and mother took the Gaustabanen down and the others walked (we had parked one car at the Gaustabanen parking lot in advance). The weather was not that good but it was a really nice tour.

I would still choose Gaustblikk as accomodation. It is kind of nostalgic with the old wooden walls and laid back temper :-)
