We spent six nights of sheer bliss in a superior lakeside room, starting our break on the 150 bus from Saltzburg. The bus drops you off beside the Zwolferhorn Cable Car and then its a 15 walk through the small town to Villa Alma. Be aware that there is no lift if you like to pack for all occasions including 'the kitchen sink' - however the staff are more than happy to assist.

The staff were all friendly and happy to advise on places to eat or ring and check opening time for museums and other attractions. 

We had a deluxe double room with balcony on the second floor with the most fabulous view of the lake and mountains. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom had good quality toiletries for us to use. 

Breakfast was laid out and served downstairs, and was absolutely delicious. We really felt set up for the day. There was also a seperate lounge and dining area for getting together, and an ideal space for the wet or gloomy days to read a book, or in my case do a bit of embroidery. A gown and slippers are supplied for using the sauna.

Theres loads to see locally, but please check the closing times of local attractions (St Gilgen is only a small, albeit charming town) such as the Mozarthaus which was closed during the week at the beginning of  September.  We used the free bus pass, provided by the hotel to visit Saltzburg and travel back from Strobl on the 150 bus after a stroll beside the lake from St Gilgen to Strobl. The buses are modern, clean, frequent and best of all punctual and reliable.

We can recommend the Zwölferhorn Cable Car to the summit and a wander around the top, and walk down (if you have stout walking boots and even better, walking poles); a ferry ride from St Gilgen to St Wolgang and then a ride up the SchafbergBahn cog railway. We used our bus pass to visit Saltzburg to see the fortress and would have used the pass to visit again, but it was actually just lovely to sit on the balcony and chill.

In summary Villa Alma offers the most relaxing setting for a totalled chilled getaway and the staff are incredibly welcoming and attentive.

A must for scenery and soothing the senses

We spent four nights in a superior lakeside room, and Villa Alma’s location exceeded expectations. Nestled right on the lake and just a short stroll from restaurants and the local buses, it was the perfect home base. We arrived via the 150 bus from the Salzburg train station—a scenic, easy 50-minute ride.

Our second-floor room was cozy and full of natural light, with a generous balcony outfitted with a table, chairs, and a sitting area. The bed was very comfortable, and we appreciated the excellent water pressure in the shower—a small detail that made a big difference.

Downstairs, the breakfast and living room area served as relaxed, welcoming spaces where we gathered each morning and later enjoyed playing games with friends. The outdoor lounge chairs were perfect for unwinding, and weather permitting the direct lake access is great for swimming and paddleboarding. Breakfast was consistently delicious, with eggs and coffee drinks made to order and beautifully presented.

What really stood out, though, was the staff. They were incredibly thoughtful and attentive, remembering the little things—from our morning coffee orders to helping with laundry. Their tips for local activities helped us make the most of our stay.

Another great perk: the hotel provided a regional bus pass valid throughout the area.

Although it rained every day of our visit, we didn’t feel limited. We love hiking and highly recommend the 2.5-hour trail to Wolfgangsee—have lunch there and take the ferry back to St. Gilgen for a lovely loop. The tram ride to the top of the Zwölferhorn (best done on a clear day) was a highlight, with trails at the summit and the option to hike down. We also enjoyed walking the trails near the Salzburg fortress.

Despite the weather, this stay was truly memorable. Villa Alma offered warmth, comfort, and a perfect slice of lakeside serenity.

Sehr, sehr gut

There’s nothing to not love about this hotel! The location is superb, the accommodation itself is quiet, spotless and well designed and the staff are friendly and warm. We had fluffy large towels and high quality linen which made for a restful stay. There’s free bikes and paddle boards, which we used and had great fun on. Breakfast is a relaxed buffet with high quality produce. The weather was a bit patchy so we also made use of the sauna and cooled off in the lake. All in all, a fantastic stay which was faultless. We don’t usually return to the same accommodation twice but in this case, I think we’ll make an exception!
