Say hello to skiing paradise. Les Deux Alpes is a flagship ski resort in the heart of the Ecrins mountains offering some of the highest skiing in the French Alps. From the glacier funicular you can ski from 3,600m all the way to the village of Mont de Lans without taking a lift – that’s a vertical drop of almost 2,300m. It’s also great for beginners as many of the easy slopes are up the mountain; intermediates will love the 200km of corduroy and there’s enough steep stuff and potential powder for those who like to shred. Les Deux Alpes also has a park for freestyle riders and a slopestyle section with rails, boxes and a selection of kickers for every level.

Best time to ski in Les Deux Alpes

The season runs from mid-December to mid-April with the glacier guaranteeing skiing throughout, even into summer. The best time for powder days is late winter (mid February onwards). January is cold, dry and sunny (with emptier pistes as bonus) – thermal underwear is a must. Les Deux Alpes is also a good option if you’re coming in peak season, whether Christmas, February holidays or Easter – its sophisticated and modern lift season means that queues are not such an issue here. The resort is also a great place to come later in the season for some spring time skiing. The fact it’s home to slopes that face every point of the compass means there will always be somewhere to ski.

Things to do in Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes is the place to channel your inner James Bond – it’s home to three paragliding schools. They’ll have you skiing off the mountain, launching into the air and flying down – all safely attached to a tandem pilot. It’s an experience you won’t regret. Other activities you can try include snowshoeing, ice skating and ice dodgem cars, yes seriously. Les Deux Alpes is also great for shopping, with over 200 stores, including own brand outlets like Billabong, Rip curl, Nike and Quiksilver. Meanwhile the town’s 30 or so bars amply cater for all your après needs from O’Brians Irish bar to the nightclub L’Avalanche - rightfully earning Les Deux Alpes with the reputation for some of the best après in France.
