If you wanted to create the perfect ski resort ideally situated in one of the highest and most spectacular ski areas of the French Alps, you’d probably come up with Avoriaz – which is what they did. Purpose-built in the 1960s, traffic free and at 1,800m, perfectly located to access the highest slopes, Avoriaz is one of those resorts well placed to withstand the irregularities of mother nature. Positioned within the Portes du Soleil ski area, the resort gives access to an incredible 266 pistes for all abilities, 10 snowparks and 89 slopeside restaurants. With no traffic bar the occasional horse-drawn sleigh, the town is charm itself, and children friendly.
If you want the best chance of perfect snow and a deal that’s not going to break the bank we say January. Heading out to the Alps after Christmas and New Year mayhem, and before the February holidays is always a good bet. Yes, the days are still short, but the colder weather means more reliable snow. If it’s the party scene you’re after, go for New Year’s or go in March when the longer days mean afternoon cocktails in the sun.
Things to do in Avoriaz
In Avoriaz there’s no shortage of alternate activities to get your adrenaline fix. Like ski joering – think of it like water-skiing except you’re behind a horse. There’s also cross country skiing, e-fat bikes, backcountry ski-touring and for the really adventurous – underwater ice diving in the nearby Lake Montriond. If the kids want some time-out from skiing, try the tropical-themed waterpark ‘Aquariaz’ which is awesome for families. After all that, hit the town for a hot sauna or hot wine to warm up. But if you really want to turn the temperature up, the new Folie Douce is the place to party when après hour kicks off. After that, head to The Place, which is home to live bands, DJs and some great cocktails.
