Welcome to Tignes Ski Resort

Once the purpose-built poor relation of upmarket Val d’Isère, Tignes has emerged from its neighbour’s shadow to become one of the most happening resorts in the Alps. It’s home to some epic freeriding for both skiers and boarders, genuinely brilliant for beginners and intermediates and some of the liveliest après bars. What’s not to love? Situated at 2,100m, it gives access to 300km of pistes across the Tignes-Val d’Isère area, with the Grande Motte lift going up to 3,400m. And when it’s a powder day, the options are limitless. Think untracked snow off the piste and for the adventurous, steep and soft turns between the trees.

Best time to ski in Tignes

Thanks to the Grande Motte glacier, Tignes is one of the few resorts where you can ski in the summer – although that may change in the years ahead. At any rate, it’s one of the most snow-sure resorts to go for, with one of the longest seasons, opening at the end of November and continuing through to the first week of May. That gives a lot of options. Desperate for your snow fix, then get in early before the Christmas rush. Prefer your skiing with afternoon sunshine then head out from March onwards. With a highly developed snow-making infrastructure, there will always be enough snow cover.

Things to do in Tignes

If you really want to score some bragging rights, Tignes is just the place. There’s ice diving beneath the Tignes lake and ice climbing frozen waterfalls nearby – wild experiences away from the noise and crowds. Sounds a bit chilly? Well, there’s plenty else you can do too, from dog sledding to snowshoe hiking, mountain biking to ice skating, snowtubing to paragliding. There’s also a mini ramp and skatepark for any rider who finds the day simply too short. Remember to keep some energy in reserve – you’ll need it for Tignes’s legendary après scene, which has something for everyone whether you’re into hip hop or 90s rock – or just after a quiet beer with your mates.
