Wild and beautiful. Boy does Austria's Wildschönau live up to its name. Consisting of four rural villages in the Tyrol valleys, this is a ski resort full of natural rural charm. Wunderschön! Base yourself in Niederau for direct access to a fun mix of blues and reds on the Markbachjoch slopes. Or head over to Auffach to discover a labyrinth of intermediate pistes running down Mount Schatzberg. For a more relaxed ambience, take a look at Oberau and Thierbach - you'll need to jump on the ski bus to get to the main lift stations, but the upside is you'll be surrounded by jaw-dropping mountain scenery. Simply stunning!

Best time to ski in Wildschonau
The ski season in Wildschönau gets going mid-December and usually runs through to late March. Granted, it's not the highest resort in the Kitzbühel Alps, but the snow cannons are primed and ready to top up the pistes if needed, and January tends to be the best month for fresh snow dumps. As a family-friendly resort, there are plenty of fun events during the holidays. Head to Oberau's Drachental Family Park in December for ice skating, sledging, campfires, and live music. The grommets will have a ball! Or welcome in the new year at Wildschönau's Super Party and Flame Show. Prosit Neujahr!

The apres ski vibe in Wildschönau is upbeat and family-friendly. Enjoy traditional Tyrolean pretzel soup, and Kasspatzl made from local produce. And wash it down with Krautinger schnapps distilled in Wildschönau. Prost! Take a break from the slopes with a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through Thierbach's stunning snowy meadows, or whizz down the 6km toboggan run at Niederau. The 'Drachenflitzer' coaster ride at Oberau's Drachental Family Park will put a smile on everyone's face. And a snowshoe walk from Auffach will reveal spectacular unspoiled mountain scenery.
