I had the pleasure staying at The Rex during my solo snowboarding trip in Zermatt. The room was excellent, clean, and the breakfast was additionally delicious! I would highly recommend Backzeit, it's a nice change of flavour from your traditional pastry. Further, the front desk workers were also incredibly helpful, specifically Katie. She made sure I was taken care of, aware of the times of my train and flight out of Geneva. Katie also gave me some solid recommendations to eat around the village! She also helped secure my luggage in a storage room while I snowboarded one last time in Zermatt - despite having checked out. Whenever I come back I'll make sure to have The Rex be my top choice to stay

Outstanding service and stay!

I stayed in this hotel about 30 years ago on a one week ski trip. That stay would have been one star.  I had a single room at back of hotel which sucked.  I note from some recent reviews that the single rooms still suck.  This time I booked a superior double overlooking the Matterhorn and really enjoyed the 2 night stay.  I hardly recognized the hotel since its been refurbished and modernized over the years.
We saw the Matterhorn for 5 minutes since weather was cool and cloudy.  However we enjoyed the room, the ambiance, the location and breakfast.  Its a short walk to the main drag with many restaurants and cafes close to the Rex.  Definitely five stars this time.

Great stay finally after all these years.

This was a wonderful find and experience. Stunning views from the large and comfortable rooms. The staff are fabulous and the food - delicious. This was a stand out hotel on our 6 week visit to Europe ! An easy walk to the Main Street but removed from the husky and bustle. We loved our stay here - thank you

What a gem

Thank you for writing this extensive review—we were expecting it, as you mentioned it multiple times to us. I feel it’s important to address your specific points directly:

First off all again as many times mentioned before, we are sorry that you were so dissatisfied with your stay with us, due to your room and unlike mentioned these dissatisfactions are a first for us and not a "recurring" problem our staff would know of.

You booked a single room through a tour operator, while your friends booked higher-category rooms. From our side there is a clear price differences in these two categories, we cannot control how much a tour operator charges from there on. From the beginning, it was clearly communicated to us that you were unhappy with the single room in general. Unfortunately, we were fully booked and couldn’t offer you another room category as requested. Otherwise, we would have happily provided you with another room to ensure your satisfaction. We take our guest's satisfaction very serious and always suggest solutions.

Also we mention always to guests to consider that when booking through a third party, it’s somewhat a risk in terms of the appearance since we clearly show accurately each room type on all our own channels and prices vary massively on our side from the 2 categories mentioned. How 3rd party sellers describe our rooms is not in our control.

Regarding the sewage smell, our staff and even a professional company came by, both investigated and could not detect the odor. All our water supply lines are renovated unlike in other hotels from the same years built. Yet we completely understand some people may be more sensitive to smells, and therefore we took your complaint still very seriously. Despite numerous attempts to accommodate you, we simply had no way to move you due to full occupancy. We even suggested a refund so you could change hotels, which there are many within 1 min walk from us and you could've enjoyed breakfast with your friends here.

For clarification, your travel agent, Jack, declined our suggestion multiple times to reduce the room rate on our side due to all your dissatisfaction, so we offered at least a complimentary dinner. Of course, third-party agents may describe the situation differently and the agent's commission is made on the room rate likely the reason why they declined our offer. That this wasn't communicated transparently to you by them is unfortunate and sad to hear.

Regardless, our entire team was working on this issue for you, doing everything we could within our limits. Considering these conversations we had with your travel agent,  we simply had no further idea what else you expected us to offer. Receiving a one-star rating to the whole team and hotel feels very extreme and my opinion only justified if we didn't care which was the complete opposite, especially given that the rest of your group was satisfied with their stay.

I am very sure my whole team did the very best any hospitality establishment could’ve done unlike describe in this review, without leaving any suggestion to improve the situation.

Was beyond excited about my first visit to Zermatt. A tour company booked my group into the Rex for 6 nights. 

My traveling companions were given a queen room which was spacious with lovely amenities appropriate in a 4 star hotel. I was booked into a single room, 38, which was like a dorm room, spare at best, with no amenities. Upon opening the door to the bathroom, a strong odor of sewage overwhelmed me. 

I reported this to the front desk and they responded as if this was not a new problem and they would address it. I requested another room and was willing to pay to be upgraded. Unfortunately, due to the length of my stay, to give me another room would have required 3 room changes and no upgrades were available. Despite numerous attempts to improve the situation the odor did not improve. The last attempt was the placement of a huge bottle of air freshener in the bathroom. 

After 2 nights, they were able to change my room to the same accommodation on the floor below, 28. Logically, this would not be better as my assumption is that sewage moves with gravity. I agreed to the change and for the first 2 nights, there wasn't an odor.

The next day, the sewage smell became apparent and I reported this to the front desk. They were fully booked and unable to offer me another room. They did offer to waive the reservation cancellation fee if I chose to check out early and find another hotel. This was not a viable option as I was with a group who were happy with their accommodation. 

In the 2 single rooms I stayed in, in addition to the smell of sewage, I could hear people going up and down the stairs, the sound of water running, the person in the room above me and the sound of bottles being dumped in the trash. When I initially reported the odor to the front desk manager, I told him I felt like Cinderella in the single room compared to the room my traveling companions had. 

No offer of compensation was offered until I contacted our tour operator who negotiated a complimentary dinner for my party of 3 at their restaurant, Stockhorn. I do not feel a dinner properly compensates for 6 nights of dorm room accommodations including the smell of sewage. 

I have never had a problem like this in my travels and feel this should qualify as a health code violation. 

On the up side, their bakery made delicious bread and if they could have piped that smell into the bathroom, my stay may have been more pleasant. 

I WOULD STRONGLY CAUTION ANYONE FROM BOOKING A STANDARD SINGLE ROOM. If you choose to stay at the Rex, upgrade. As mentioned above the queen room was lovely.
