I’ve now stayed at Vestlia Resort in Geilo four times, always booking the Penthouse Geilo suite for a winter family gathering — and once again it delivered an excellent all-round experience. Rating: 5/5.

The location is a real advantage for a ski trip: you’re right by the lifts and slopes at Vestlia, with easy access to the train station as well. Parking is straightforward, with both outdoor spaces and a basement garage.
The Penthouse Geilo suite is the star of the stay. With four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, it’s genuinely practical for a larger family. The main living area is spacious and works well as a shared hub, with a proper kitchen (including fridge and freezer). However, the kitchen was surprisingly poorly equipped for cooking proper dinners, and we ended up bringing a lot of basic kitchen items from home to make it work. What really sets it apart is the setting: terraces on three sides and a sweeping view over Geilo and the ski area — exactly as shown in my photos.

Facilities are another reason we return. The large pool complex (waterslide and jacuzzi) keeps both children and adults happy, and the resort’s lodge-style feel suits a winter break. Some of us also used the spa and came back with positive feedback on the treatments. We used the bowling centre too, which is a great backup plan when the weather aren’t ideal.

Check-in was completely smooth, and it was nice that reception staff spoke Norwegian throughout. Service was good, though not quite “exceptional”.

Breakfast was very strong, with a wide range of hot and cold options. Even when the hotel was busy, we always found a table — although clearing tables could have been faster. Lunch was chaotic on one day due to the number of guests, with long waits. A numbered-table system would likely make it easier for staff to deliver food efficiently, especially since orders aren’t placed at the table.

What could be improved
•	Include bathrobes for pool use at this price level, rather than charging extra.
•	Improve lunch logistics (e.g., numbered tables) to reduce delays when it’s busy.

Value is the one hesitation: around NOK 20,000 for two nights (Sun–Tue, the cheapest winter days) is undeniably high. That said, for a multi-generational ski break where accommodation, views and family facilities all matter, it still works very well for us — and I’d happily return next year!

If you go:
- If you plan to use the pool, factor in the bathrobe charge (or bring your own).
- Try to avoid lunch at peak times on very busy days, or be prepared for longer waits.
- If you’re planning to cook in the suite, consider bringing a few essentials, as the kitchen setup may not cover everything you’d expect for dinner prep.

A standout family penthouse stay in Geilo

We went to Vestlia over New Year on recommendation from another family, and we weren’t disappointed! 

Family of 4, with one child in the child care for 3 hours each morning (600 NOK) and one child in ski school for 80 mins each morning, meant the adults could ski freely on their own then pick up the children and go for some lighter skiing. Be aware there are NO options for longer ski school - so don’t plan on leaving the kids all day, like you can in France for instance. Ski school and child care (TrollKlubben) are right next to each other at the main resort area 50m from the hotel. 

Skiing - the pistes that were open were great, nice and wide and well maintained,  but about half were closed when we were there due to poor snow fall. We ended up doing the same blue/green runs multiple times. Only one red run was open on the Vestlia resort-side of the valley. If you are a seasoned skier who likes a challenge, this resort will not be for you. If you’re looking for calm skiing with a young family learning to ski, it’s perfect. There are also plenty of small ski park jumps and obstacles to try if you’re feeling adventurous. It’s a small resort, so every piste brings you back to the main area - you can’t get lost if you stay on piste! We did not ski on the Geilo side of the resort (a short ski bus ride away) because a) you don’t have enough time to get there and back during the very short kids ski school (80 mins), and b) everyone we spoke to said the conditions were worse, but there are more runs there to try. 

We stayed in one of Vestlia’s lodge rooms - very comfortable, with a spacious living room and kitchen. Two small bedrooms and a comfortable sofa bed. Nice balcony looking up the valley. We made our own lunch every day in the lodge in our kitchen.

Fantastic amenities - the pool is large, with a separate kids shallow pool, water slide and hot tub. The soft play area was also heavily used by our youngest. Clean and well maintained hotel, with plenty of bar area tables and sofas. 

Half board booking includes buffet breakfast which has a wide range of choice. Dinner was a 3 course set menu for the adults (always delicious and interesting food) and buffet for the kids. Be aware you need to pre-book your dinner slot - and the early ones get filled up quickly by the families with young kids. Alcohol is very expensive - the hotel will charge you around 600 NOK (£44) for the recommended pairing wines (3 small glasses) with dinner. Better to make a short (free) ski bus trip to Geilo town and pick up your alcohol in bulk from the supermarket or wine shop (6 bottles for £70).

Had an easy experience with ski rental with Ski Geilo - it was very easy to pick everything up, very slick process. Ski passes can be bought in the hotel at a machine. 

Over New Year the hotel put on a kids disco, special 4 course meal for adults, and a huge firework display. One of the best NY celebrations we’ve had away from home.

Travelling there, we chose the train from Oslo - if you have young kids the family carriage has a soft play area, which keeps them occupied. Train stops right in Geilo, about a 5 min drive to the resort. 

Nightlife - we never even tried to find out - not the kind of resort to have a nightclub or similar to entertain younger adults. We didn’t see anyone but young families. 

Overall - fantastic holiday, albeit with limited skiing due to poor snow (not the resort’s fault) and we will probably go again, at least while the kids are young and still learning.

Fantastic for families and beginners

Vestlia Resort is one of Norway's finest spa hotels - located in Geilo - the cosy mountain village midway between Oslo and Bergen. At the top floor of the hotel we have our 3 penthouse suites, among the biggest and most luxurious in Norway. Whatever your need, we can accommodate it!
