Best known for its spectacular annual FIS Night Slalom Race, Austria's beautiful medieval town of Schladming really knows how to deliver fun skiing in epic proportions. Peer into the snow-dusted pine forests, and you'll discover streams of red pistes flowing down four magnificent mountains. Yes, four! This intermediate skiers' paradise also has some challenging terrain up its sleeve. Two World Cup downhill runs, the Dachstein Glacier Superpark and gnarly moguls, no less. And if you're having way too much fun and don't want to stop, you can even ski on floodlit runs after nightfall. Just keep skiing!

Best time to ski in Schladming

Schladming's ski season normally runs from December to April, but on good snow years, the slopes sometimes open in November. The resort itself is relatively low in altitude, but the lofty peaks surrounding it mean snowfall is good. And an armada of snow cannons keeps the slopes running smoothly, whatever the conditions. Bring on the pow! January is the time to clip into your skis if you want to watch the Schladming Night Race from Planai's famous 'witch's cauldron.' Or head here during the February Half Term for good powder and lots of family fun.

Things to do in Schladming

If all of that skiing leaves you craving a mountain load of food, head into town for an international spread of gastronomic delights. Tuck into a bowl of traditional cheesy Käsespätzl, or go off-piste with spicy Mexican tacos. Ready to party? The mountain bars are where things really start to rev up. Sink an ice-cold Steigl and down a few shots of schnapps to get you going. Then head to the Platzhirsch-Alm for sabre-popped bottles of Champagne and dance to hand-raising disco beats at the CultClub. Prost!
