We reached this refuge very tired, thirsty and hungry after a long day on the TMB. The beds, showers and toilets were all good and the extra touch of hygienic mattress and pillow covers certainly aided the best night of sleep we’ve had in a dorm. We were also delighted with the food - fresh homemade salad, delicious vegetable pasta and a fruit salad to replace the vitamins I suspect we were lacking! Our only gripe was that the owner seemed to be alone when we arrived and was obviously busy and absorbed in cooking and registering new guests. As a result, we didn’t feel able to buy a drink as we had at other refuges on arrival. Breakfast, however, was very good.

Good food, facilities and value for money.

Upon arrival at the Gîte Le Moulin in August, we were greeted by one of the owners in a very unwelcoming manner. We felt judged. He basically made fun of us for arriving early. As I was sitting in the common area, while I waited for my partner who was using the WC, he came in and sarcastically asked if it was raining outside (because otherwise, why would I be inside?). It wasn’t, it was sunny. He then asked if I was only there to use his wi-fi. I wasn’t, I was flipping through a guide book and waiting for my partner. He asked if I was unhappy in the mountains. He said that we weren’t doing it right, arriving early and that we should have been hiking up the nearby climb instead to see a certain lake (which I’m sure is beautiful and worth it if you weren’t planning to embark on a 200+ km trek the next day. This was actually day one of a fourteen-day hike in the alps from Chamonix to Zermatt). 

Once he understood why we were there and what our plans were, he got off our backs, as if we earned his respect. We had pre-booked and partially paid for our stay and this is how we were greeted. 

The packed picnic was very good. Kudos to the person who prepared it for us.

A charming gîte a little (few hundred metres) off the TMB. We shared a room with another couple in a dorm for 4 with 2 bunk beds. Disposable bedsheets and pillowcases a plus for hygiene.  Plenty of showers and toilets (for the ratio of guests). A family run business and you can tell they really put a lot of love and labour into the Gîte, they are always buzzing around looking after guests. The food was the best we had during our TMB, family style cooking with seconds offered.

Why is this getting great reviews????
The only refugio where you turn up and no one's even there!
You call the number on a sign that says "if not here call..." so you call and just get told off and they're not going to check you in until 3.  That'd be cool if you could buy a drink and lunch and chill but NOPE!
And when the poor guy does turn up he's alone, stressed and trying to cook dinner that won't be ready till 7pm!
They only have one beer, red and white wine, soda and chips!  
EVERY other refugio is ready for hungry hikers but this one.
The only one not to tell you specifically when dinner is or ask your preferences.  You feel like you're bothering the poor guy not that he's going to give you anything but what's above.
In the dorm of 12 there's ONE outlet and only 2 in the common room.  Will be a gladiator game tonight over who gets that.

Tried to find a hotel but of course they're all booked.  I'd be willing to pay 5x as much to get the heck out of here!

Don't believe the good reviews. Worst place on the TMB

Great little Auberge who did an awesome vego dinner in a nice location. Breakfast also was good. We came off this TMB day kind of starving and had a late lunch up the road at Auberge La Boerne which was excellent because Le Moulin didn’t provide a la carte food/ drink. The dorms were small, and bedding a bit strange, but the showers were excellent and the couple running it were totally lovely. Recommended.
