The youth hostel was very unfriendly. I tried for days to book a room and finally I got the message that they had given it to somebody else. There is no website you can book it on so you have to do it by mail and the respons is really bad. 

Now we have to cancel the trip.

All the hotels in Engelberg are more expensive than Engelberg Youth Hostel.
Everything is very clean so I really liked that. The owners are really friendly
You have to bring your own towels and you have to make up your own bed with sheets from them.
The breakfast is good, nothing special but good,
All the double rooms are separed beds , so as a couple you have to sleap separate. 

You have to pay more (6.00 CHF per person per night) if you don't have a Youth Hostel Membership Card. 
If you want to park you car in front of the hostel, you have to pay 3 CHF/a day
You don't have free wifi, you have to pay.

Cheapest way to visit Engelberg

Belgium

The hostel is located a short walk from the train station. Location is okay and everything can easily be reached on foot. We walked to the Titlis cable car station, local COOP supermarket, etc. The hostel was quiet (we were there on the Easter weekend in 2014). There is no communal kitchen and no cooking is allowed in the room. We shared a toilet, but had our own shower and basin in our double room. The staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was your usual cereals, bread, cold cuts, cheese, boiled eggs, etc. In true hostel style, you are expected to sort your cutlery and crockery after breakfast.  
I stayed in a hotel on a previous trip to Engelberg and (obviously) a hotel is nicer, BUT as far as value for money is concerned, you would be hard-pressed to beat the Berghaus youth hostel. I would go back to this hostel and to Engelberg. I love Engelberg. You can't go wrong if you love mountains and beautiful scenery. Do not stay to short, because weather can be wet and cloudy, so you want to stay long enough to have a chance to catch a good, clear day to ascend Mount Titlis.

I spend here one night, and although it was a nice hostel the wifi didn't worked at all (although that's written on the website).
Also when I came at the room it was obvious they don't clean/look at the rooms really well. I was lucky to be not the last person in the room, since the last bed didn't had a mattress. In the morning I saw that bed was also in use (without a mattress), so this hostel should definitely adjust their website, or at least make sure that you can choose to book a bed with/or without a mattress for a 90% discount.

4 of us stayed here last September whilst walking the Alpen Pass Route across Switzerland.  A comfortable stay in a very quiet hostel at this time - all the kids back at school.  Good facilities and all clean and tidy.  Convenient location for the town.
Good option if on budget - we had room to ourselves which was modern and clean.  Comfortable beds
Staff very friendly.

Great location in Engelberg

And the more unusual, the better. How about hurtling downhill on a mountain tricycle? Or a cable car ride up to the magnificent panorama? Or quite simply the rugged, blue beauty of the mountains?
