Sauze Chalet by Besson rental ski

Sauze d'Oulx

Was so looking forward to skiing in Italy after not having been here for several years. 

We arrived and bright sunshine greeted us. However it snowed overnight, and continued to snow for 2 days non stop which was great as the resort needed snow as some of the runs were showing the signs of mud !! 

Got a ski locker at the bottom of the Clothes chairlift which was handy and very much needed as having to walk up and down that hill every day with ski boots on carrying all your kit wool have been a complete nightmare. 

The lifts in this ski resort and across the whole ski area are so outdated. So slow, keep stopping and for 90% of the week the main link to get access to the other ski areas was closed. This caused a major problem as we were restricted to skiing the same runs over and over again and kept everyone in the same area which meant it was always packed on the slopes. They did open up the link on our second to last day . . . .where we discovered that the actual link from Sauze to Sestriere is in fact a 2 man chairlift which has got to be the slowest chairlift in Europe. It is a complete joke . It more or less confirmed that the infrastructure for skiers in this resort is a shambles. They need to invest a lot of money to bring it up to modern standards. Once we got over the mountain and into the rest of the ski area it was far better.

There is an abundance of red runs for intermediate skiers and a couple of blue runs which can be quite tricky. However with the heavy snowfalls we had during the week hardly any of the runs were cared for by the piste basher machines . . .only got done 4 days after we arrived. These machines were not out on a daily basis looking after and managing the snow. 

I would not want to learn to ski in this resort. It is not a beginners area to learn and it could be dangerous for anyone who has never been on skis before. With a severe lack of blue runs for beginners . . .and only 1 blue run back to the resort, which was reduced to mud, slush and grass, and one which was dangerous to ski down - we had to get the chairlift back down - I fear for anyone who is not used to such conditions. 

A 250 euro ski pass for the week was fine as it included the chance to ski across into France for 2 days. However if the links are not open then you cannot even leave your own sector never mind get across to France . . .and this coupled with the severely outdated chairlift system it would take you about 2 hours to get there, ski for an hour and then have to make your way back hoping that they haven’t closed off one of the links to your resort - that would mean a heavy taxi fare back to Sauze.

Keeping with the outdated feel about the ski area, the runs are poorly marked and can be very confusing indeed. Worst I have seen in all the years I have been skiing. 

Overall, if the links had have been open then it would have made for a more pleasant weeks skiing. With that in mind I would never return to Sauze D’Olux for another skiing holiday. Far better places to go, especially for beginners.
