Our stay at Hidden Ridge was significantly impacted by a malfunctioning fireplace chimney that could neither be fully opened nor fully closed. We visited in December during a period of extreme Arctic weather, with outdoor temperatures reaching approximately –15°F (–25°C). Throughout our stay, we were unable to eliminate a severe cold-air draft coming from the fireplace, which rendered the main living area largely unusable.

The chimney was controlled by an “infinite” dial with no clear open or closed positions, making it impossible to determine whether the damper was actually closed. Despite multiple calls to the service desk, the issue was never resolved.

In addition, there were visible black soot marks above the fireplace and throughout the unit, strongly suggesting that the chimney also could not be fully opened and was not properly ventilated. On one evening, we attempted to light a fire, but the unit quickly filled with smoke, forcing us to extinguish it immediately. Based on these observations, my strong suspicion is that the chimney control mechanism is broken and stuck in a position that is neither open nor closed—allowing cold air to enter while preventing proper ventilation.

The persistent draft significantly affected our comfort and safety. In hindsight, I regret not having a thermometer to document indoor temperatures, as the unit felt below reasonable habitation standards given the extreme cold. Space was already limited, and my son, who slept on the pull-out couch near the fireplace, had to sleep in his ski clothing to stay warm.

I also regret not recognizing and reporting the extent of the smoke damage and cold draft immediately upon arrival, as these issues became increasingly apparent over the course of our stay.

Chimney Problems Ruined our Experience

This place looks cute and cosy from the outside but that's where it all ends.  The rooms are old, small, tired, and in desperate need of a refurb.  Carpet disgusting, Kitchen drawer would not shut and stayed fully open creating a trip hazard in the tiny kitchen.  Fridge small and didn't seal properly.   The thermostat is so old that it doesn't kick in until the wee hours of the night and then we were too hot.  The lounge area was too small to house all 6 of us and not enough seating with one small 3 seater (fold out bed) and 1 x one seater.  The downstairs bedroom windows and door do not seal properly and the winter chill coming through the seals was like a wind tunnel, absolutely freezing cold.  A couple of positives are:-  The saving grace was the fireplace with plenty of precut firewood that you can help yourself to and kindling from the reception.  The staff were all super friendly and helpful. However the postivies do not outweigh the the negatives. Disappointing stay and therefore I cannot recommend this place based on our personal experience. Considering what we paid for this place it was not value for money.  : (

Second time I have visited this place. The views are amazing and I got a free upgrade from an apartment to a lodge which was great with views of the mountains. Since I last visited in February 2024 nothing appears to have been updated leaving some of the facilities in disrepair. The sauna had splinters coming out of the wood, wooden panels falling out and wobbling (I nearly fell off when I sat down). The sauna was really hot which was good, just needs some updating to the floor/seating.
The hot pool was good and mostly empty when I went in due to the time of year - on one occasion staff removed alcohol from people drinking in there which was good to see. The cabin itself was fine, it isn't a modern place and I expected it to be as it was because I have stayed here before. I would still visit again as the views are in my opinion unmatched - but I am hoping a few things are updated in the meantime. The staff are all so friendly and helpful.

Not sure how this place rates a 4-star and 4.1 review. We stayed for 2 days in a loft. Total cost was just $1,400. Run down, smelly, ratty carpets, broken appliances... and I could go on. The pictures on the web were taken when this place was new. It doesn't look like that now. Honestly, for this much money, book with one of the hotels right in town. These are really 4 and 5 stars.

While I’m glad to hear you enjoyed aspects of your visit, such as the peaceful natural setting, the well-equipped unit, and our outdoor hot pools, I’m truly sorry that other parts of your stay did not meet your expectations.
Regarding the fireplace, I completely understand how frustrating that experience must have been. I’m glad our team was able to assist in putting out the fire and offer an alternative room, though I understand you chose to remain in your unit. Please know that all chimneys at the resort are professionally cleaned and inspected on a regular schedule by a third-party company to ensure proper maintenance. Our Maintenance team also installed a chimney blocker the following day to prevent further smoke from entering your unit, but I regret that the lingering smoke still affected your comfort.
I’m also concerned to hear about the odor from neighboring guests. All of our units are strictly non-smoking, and we take such reports very seriously. Because this wasn’t brought to our attention during your stay, we weren’t able to address it in real time. Had we known, we would have acted immediately to resolve it and ensure your comfort.
With regard to housekeeping, I apologize that our service fell short during your stay, including the missed replenishment of tissues, towels, and the removal of garbage. Guests staying five nights or longer receive a full cleaning every third morning, which includes vacuuming. Our daily service focuses on towel refresh and replenishment of amenities. If we had been aware of these concerns while you were here, we would have been happy to address them immediately. I will also be following up with our Housekeeping team to ensure these standards are consistently upheld for all guests.
We’re also sorry to hear about your experience with the local Roam Transit bus service. While the buses are operated independently from the resort, we appreciate you sharing your feedback, and I will be passing your comments along to their team directly.
Lastly, I was disappointed to learn that you did not feel as welcomed by our staff as we would hope every guest to feel. Providing warm, professional hospitality is something we take great pride in, and your comments will be shared with our team as part of our continued efforts to improve guest experience.

I was excited to stay here for 5 days but in the end i was disappointed. We got upgraded yo a loft chalet with two bedrooms and a balcony overlooking the forest which we were happy about. But, things went from good to bad.  Room was not cleaned well any of the days. Tissue was not replenished, toilet paper forgotten twice, floor not vacuumed on any day, with garbage laying around, soap in the washroom not refilled and chimney not cleaned. We had a big problem with ventilation after using the fire place once. The whole place filled with smoke and the smell stayed for the duration of our stay although we kept the windows and balcony opened as much as we could. We only used the fire place for about an hour - and had the staff start it for us. But the chimney was not properly ventilated plus he used wet wood and there was a lingering horrible smell. After an hour or so keeping all the windows open and freezing as it was so cold, we called the front desk staff and as them to come and put down the fire and take out the burned wood which they did.  After airing out the room without the wood we thought the smell wood stop but it still lingered to the point that it was choking. We kept the windows open all night and slept with a heater but it was really bad. We gad trips planned next morning so asked the staff to  properly air out the house. They gave us an option to move to another chalet but with our trips planned out we found it more of a hassle to do so - thus decided to stay. And that was a mistake. People moved in under us one or two days before check out and they smoked marijuana basically every hour or so we were in the room including the night. The constant smell everywhere in our home was so bad that it the night we had to open windows because both the disgusting smell of people smoking in their rooms plus the fire smell really made it hard to breathe and spoiled our time here. We did not drive, so took the local bus which we were given free tickets for. These tickets were good on any Banff bus except the lake Louise bus, which was nice. However, the bus driver on the way back from town to the hotel told us we cannot stay on the bus and must get out at Douglas Fir resort and walk back to the hotel. The walk is like 400 meters or so but quite scary especially in the evening or night when it is pitch black and you are walking next to a forest and hear noises from the forest. Because of that uneasy feeling we made sure to come back home while it is still light and the walk was still uncomfortable. We had to do this for 3 evenings coming back from town and the next day the bus driver let us stay on and made a 20 minute loop and dropped us by the resort as it circles around. And on the first night when we went into town and while coming back on the bus we did nit get out at Douglas Fir and the bus driver made us get out at camp 1 ground. It was late in the evening and pitch black outside and he made us get out of the bus and wait at an open bus stop in the forest for an hour because he said it was his break. That was really really uncomfortable to be dropped off there and left in the woods. After an hour he let us cone back on and dropped us by our resort bus stop.  The staff at the hotel was not so welcoming. They kept speaking Spanish among themselves, and though I can understand it I thought it was a bit unprofessional. What else? They never mentioned laundry room to us so we did not know there was one. The rooms are big yes, especially the lofts, but super dated and not cleaned well. There were a lot of stairs so people with mobility issues might find this a factor. On a more positive note, the resort is set in nature so it is peaceful and relaxing. The hot pools overlook a beautiful view and the water is set to a good temperature especially in the cold fall. There are a lot of amenities in the house, and the house is fully stocked with dishes. There is a microwave, an oven, a big size refrigerator and a dishwasher. A big kitchen table, a sofa with coffee cubes, a fireplace. I wish i could rate this property higher, but due to the housecleaning issues, bus issues, and fire smell and marijuana, i am rating it a 3 and i think I am being generous. Definitely some improvements need to be made. And some rooms should be designed for non smoking not to bother others as each house has at least two tenants (maybe more, not sure) but definitely two.

The modern condos feature wood burning fireplaces, full kitchens and patios or balconies. Take a stroll along one of the many hiking trails around Tunnel Mountain that start outside your door. The tranquil and secluded setting makes it one of Banff's best-kept secrets. Only a mile from downtown area.
