The beautiful lake-side town of Zell am See has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the 8th century. The vibrant town centre boasts a generous number of restaurants, bars and shops, plus it’s vehicle-free, which means street café opportunities aplenty.
With the lake on one side and Schmittenhöhe mountain on the other, not only does Zell am See spoil visitors when it comes to fabulous views, it also offers a vast selection of outdoor activities. Spend lazy days relaxing in the sun by the lake or hike the network of mountain trails.

Open air swimming
The crystal-clear waters of Lake Zell are so inviting that as soon as you see it, you’ll want to jump in. There are three main swimming areas, each with a heated lido, large sunbathing lawns, and water sports on offer.
Mountain huts
A big part of hiking in Austria is finding a traditional mountain hut for a bite to eat, often washed down with an ice-cold pilsner. This region is home to no less than 50 of these fabulous alpine structures.
Easy rider
An incredible region for mountain biking, Zell am See serves up routes for beginners right through to professional riders. You can access great trails straight from town too, including the easy and very beautiful 11km ride around Lake Zell.
Terrific trekking
A leisurely stroll around Lake Zell is always a great idea. But it’s so easy to access the fantastic trails of Schmittenhöhe mountain via cable car too. Even the view from the cable car station is well worth the journey.
